Bikes For Tykes

The holiday season can be a sad time of year for childen who have suffered from abuse, neglect or at-risk situations. Our Business Members, Affiliate Agencies, Volunteers, Community Members and Supporters come together to brighten their day -and their Holiday Season- by bearing gifts of bikes, helmets and safety gear! You can help us in our effort to reach them this each holiday season, just read on below to find out how!

Realities For Children’s Bikes For Tykes program is one of our longest-running distribution programs, giving bicycles and new helmets to the children we serve since 1996.  Each year, kind-hearted individuals, groups and organizations donate their new or used bicycles to us during the months of November and December (although we will accept bikes at any time during the year), then we safety-check and refurbish them via our local bike shop partners (listed below). Then on a happy day in December every year, the bikes are given to registered youth who are being served by one of our Affiliate Youth Agencies who serve local children who have been abused, neglected or are at-risk.

At the bike distribution, we provide a happy day filled with surprises, music, crafts, treats, and the most special surprise in the world for many of them: a new bike! Each child arrives with the chance to choose THE PERFECT BIKE  out of the hundreds of bicycles in the room. Every child is given a helmet to ensure safe riding, and the time and attention of a personal Elf Shopper to help them with their selection. Bicycle mechanics are on-hand to properly adjust seat height, and install training wheels if needed.
